The M4A4 is the standard assault rifle of the Counter-Terrorist side in CS2, offering a larger 30-round magazine and a higher fire rate compared to its silenced counterpart. Its damage output and versatility make it the rifle of choice for aggressive CT players who prefer sustained firepower over the tactical stealth of a suppressor.

By learning the M4A4 recoil behavior and practicing how to counter it, you can maintain solid accuracy across a variety of engagement ranges, making it a dependable workhorse weapon for any CT-side strategy. If you want to improve your CS2 shooting skills with this weapon, check out the tips and recommendations prepared by the experts at SkinKings.

M4A4 Spray Pattern Tutorial

The M4A4 spray pattern is moderately complex and rewards dedicated practice, featuring a strong vertical component early on that transitions into significant horizontal movement as the magazine depletes. Understanding each phase is critical to using the rifle at its full potential.

The first 8 to 10 bullets move upward strongly, with a noticeable leftward curve beginning around the 5th shot and becoming more pronounced through the 9th. Pulling your crosshair down and slightly right during this phase is necessary to keep shots landing on target.

After the 10th bullet, the vertical movement subsides and the spray shifts to the right for several consecutive shots. Transitioning your compensation from a downward pull to a leftward drag will keep the crosshair aligned during this horizontal phase.

The pattern then curves back to the left in the final stage before making a small rightward correction to end the magazine. These last bullets are the most erratic and are generally better handled by releasing the trigger and switching to controlled taps.

M4A4 Recoil Control Technique

M4A4 Recoil

To control the M4A4 recoil, pull your crosshair downward and slightly to the right during the initial vertical climb, then transition smoothly to a leftward drag as the spray pivots right, before making a small right adjustment as the pattern drifts left in the final phase. The transitions between each phase need to be practiced until they become fluid and automatic, as hesitation or over-correction in the middle of a spray is the most common cause of missed shots.

Key Principles to Remember

You must follow a few basic principles when choosing the M4A4 in CS2:

  • The M4A4 will not one-tap a helmeted enemy no matter where you hit them in the head – that’s just how this gun works. The AK can do it, the M4 can’t. So from the very first game you play with this rifle, train yourself to go for two headshots or just aim chest and hold the spray. A lot of new CT players keep tilting because “why didn’t that headshot kill” – now you know why, stop expecting it to.
  • The spray pattern breaks into three chunks and you need to treat them separately. First ~7 bullets climb almost straight up – pull down. Then the gun drifts left for a few shots – drag your mouse right to compensate. After that it swings back right for the longest part of the spray – correct left. It’s a slow S-shape, not chaos. Once that path clicks in your head, the whole gun starts making sense.
  • 30 rounds is a massive deal and it’s the main reason people pick this over the M4A1-S.You can fire a burst at two or even three enemies without reloading, keep your sights on the narrowest opening without wasting all your ammo, or recover from a poor start to a burst and resume firing before the magazine is empty. Don’t be afraid to hold down the left mouse button longer than you think is comfortable – the number of bullets and the damage each shot deals will forgive you for mistakes that an M4 with a suppressor simply isn’t capable of.
  • Bursting 3–5 bullets is way more reliable than full spraying past close range. At mid-range angles – think CT on Dust2, top mid on Mirage, any long-ish corridor – tap or burst. The spread opens up fast after the first 8–9 bullets and your bullets start going places you didn’t intend. Use the 30-round mag for overwhelm at close range or multi-kills, not for spraying someone’s head at long range.
  • There’s no silencer on this thing, which means enemies hear exactly where you’re shooting from. On maps where sound intel matters – and in CS2 it always matters – be aware that your first spray gives away your position instantly. That’s not a reason to avoid the gun, just something to factor into how you hold angles. Pre-aiming the spots enemies tend to peek before they peek you takes away that disadvantage completely.
  • Go into a practice server, face a wall, hold mouse1 until the mag is empty, and don’t touch your mouse at all. Look at the bullet pattern on the wall – that’s what you’re compensating against. Then do it again, this time dragging your mouse down, then down-right, then down-left as you go through the spray. Do this for 15–20 minutes across a few sessions and your hands start doing it automatically. That’s when you stop thinking about recoil and start just winning fights.
